                                 OBITUARY                   June 10, 2008

                                                   William F. Osman

 

 

 

William F. Osman, Jr., 86, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at his home in Alum Bank as a result of a Parkinson’s Disease.   He was born in Portage on September 26, 1921, the son of   William F. and Hattie (Bush) Osman. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Miriam (Bourdess) Osman, an infant daughter Shawna Michele, brothers Walter, George, Harry, Chester, and Lester Osman, sisters Emma McAuliffe and Ruth Miller, and a special nephew, William F. (Skip) Osman.

He is survived by son William R. married to Bonnie (Brook) of Waynesboro; son Terrence L. of Alum Bank, daughter Judith A. Fitch of Rushville, NY; son Thomas H., married to Mary Kay (Domonkos) of Alum Bank; son Denne L., married to Tonya (Rhodes) of Alum Bank; and son Gene A., married to Gail (Harrison) of Schellsburg.  He is also survived by his companion  Joanne Murgi, twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, sister Grace Weaver of Salem, WV, and sister-in-law Catherine Osman of Summerhill.  

He served in the United States Army during WWII with Company A of the 716th Tank Battalion stationed in the Pacific Theatre from 1942 – 1945.  He achieved five bronze stars and two purple hearts during campaigns in New Guinea, the South Philippine Liberation, and Luzon.

Bill lived a very full and active life.  Following his return from the war he spent a year traveling the continental United States on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, working for gas money along the way.  During his life he worked as a coal miner, drag-line operator, saw mill operator, farmer, truck driver, a certified welder on submarines manufactured at the General Dynamic’s Electric Boat Factory in Groton, CT, and as a construction worker on the Alaskan Canadian Highway and on the runway for the Naval Air Station in Keflavick, Iceland.  He also served as West St. Clair Township Supervisor and Road Boss, Scoutmaster for Pleasantville Boy Scout Troop 69, and was a past Post Commander and life member of the Pleasantville VFW Post 9219.   Bill enjoyed making maple syrup with his children and grandchildren, bee keeping with his companion Joanne and grandson Tim, and telling stories of his adventures to anyone who would listen. 

Friends and family will be received on Thursday, June 12, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  at the Jack H. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., Alum Bank.  The funeral services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Geisel Funeral Home in Alum Bank with Pastor Art Roxby. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral.
