OBITUARY May 7, 2007
David C. "Grumpy" Kuhns
David C. Kuhns, 80, of E. Simpson St., Bedford, PA, passed away at 11:08 PM, Friday, May 4, 2007, after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Kuhns was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 28, 1926, the son of Howard F. and Florence (Young) Kuhns. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Deborah L. Kuhns, and a brother, Howard F. Kuhns, Jr. He proudly served in the Seabees of the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War. In 1996, Dave retired after 30 years as Maintenance Foreman at Hedstrom Corp.
Known to almost all as “Grumpy,” Dave was a life member of the Bedford Fire Department, and a member of the Bedford Fire Police, the VFW and the American Legion. He was also director of Security for the Great Bedford Fair Association and a Special Deputy for the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department. Dave volunteered countless hours over the years on the Downtown Bedford Christmas Lighting Committee and was a member of the Bedford Emergency Management Agency. His efforts to help others are epitomized by his regular blood donations to the American Red Cross that totaled over 16 gallons.
Dave was the husband of Doris J. (Darkey) Kuhns whom he married on March 18, 1953. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons – David H., husband of Patti Lerwick of Cumberland Center, ME, Douglas B., husband of Janet (Potter) Kuhns and their children, Sarah L., Jason D., and Megan L. of Frederick, MD, and Dana E., husband of Joanna (Shaulis) Kuhns, and their children, Thomas W., husband of Adalide (Castanara), Jeffrey L., Joshua D., and Steven R. of Youngsville, PA. He is also survived by his sister Jean (Kuhns) Murray, wife of Richard Murray, Jeanette, PA. Grumpy will by greatly missed by his 7 grandchildren and his 3 great grandchildren – Kristin, Adrianna, and Mikayla.
Military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, the Disabled American Veterans, or the Bedford Fire Department Special Activities Fund.
A memorial service will be held at the Bedford Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 18th at 7:00 PM with the Rev. Douglas Friant officiating.
