LaVerne Shaffer, 101,  of Schellsburg, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the home she shared with her daughters, Linda Shaffer and Lorna Shaffer,  Schellsburg, PA.  She was born March 2, 1916, in Johnstown, PA, a daughter of the late Roy E. and Edna (Kinzey) Miller.  On August 8, 1936, she married Nelson V. Shaffer.  He died January 29, 1977, ending a marriage of forty years.  She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shelley Heider, a great grandson, Caleb Nolt, and a great great granddaughter, Addison Grandi.

She is survived by her eight children:  Joyce, wife of Richard Barkley, Manns Choice; Donna, wife of David Soliday, Nappanee, IN; Tom, husband of Sandra (Fleegle) Shaffer; Barry, husband of Marsha (Weaver) Shaffer; Linda and Lorna, and Perry, husband of Beverly (James) Shaffer, all of Schellsburg; and Carol, wife of Larry Shaffer, New Paris.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren:  Tracy Shaffer, husband of Angie; Stacey (Shaffer) Bontrager, wife of Gary; Sherry Shaffer; Dacia (Soliday) Reid, wife of Jeff; Brian Barkley, husband of Melanie; Denise (Soliday) Nolt, wife of George; Beth (Barkley) Schwanekamp, wife of Mark; Ann (Shaffer) Kepner, wife of Fred; Scott Shaffer; and Shannon Shaffer, husband of Brooke; and three step grandsons, Ken Davidson, Shawn Davidson,  husband of Julie; and Jeff Davidson.  Also surviving are 15 great grandchildren, one step great grandson; two step great granddaughters, 15 great great grandchildren and one step great great grandson.

She is survived by her brothers; Dayton Miller of Schellsburg, and Mark Miller, husband of Dorie, New Paris.  She is predeceased by her sister Joan Winegardner, and brothers Byron Miller, B. Jay Miller and Clair Miller.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was a lifelong member of the Helixville U.M. Church, where she was the pianist for over 60 years.  LaVerne was a tender and caring mother who greatly loved her family.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.  There will be no public viewing.  Pastor James Golla and Pastor John Bennett will be officiating.  Internment will be in the Helixville Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home in Schellsburg.
