Joe E. Koontz, 95, of Main Road, Bedford, died Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Colonial Courtyard, Bedford.
He was born in Friends Cove on March 27, 1928, the son of the late Walter and Mildred (Pennel) Koontz.
On November 5, 1950, he married the love of his life Mary Louise (Diehl), who preceded him in death on October 24, 2017. He is survived by Sons - Bruce E. Koontz companion of LaRhonda Batzel, Bedford; Joel W. Koontz, Bedford; Thomas L. husband of Tammy (Clotfelter) Koontz, Mechanicsburg; Grandsons - Brad M. husband of Miranda (Reed) Koontz, Bedford; Jeffrey K. husband of Maria (Hall) Koontz, Hesston; Joshua B. husband of Valery (Hill) Koontz, Hainesport, NJ; Kasey J. husband of Natalie (Glaug) Koontz, West Chester; their mother Carla (Pencil) Koontz, Bedford; Great Grandchildren- Joey, AJ, Will, Jacob, Zoey, Nathaniel, Zach, and Naomi; Brother- Jack Koontz husband of Margaret, Bedford and Sister- Donna Wagoner, York. He was preceded in death by infant great granddaughters, Lizzy and Mary, a sister, Virginia Hendricks and brothers Frank, Paul, Don, Tom, John, and infant twins Koontz.
Joe was a 1945 graduate of Bedford High School and a lifetime member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. He served in the Merchant Marines and as an Army paratrooper. He was the Superintendent of Service for many years at the Bedford Springs Hotel. He played football and baseball in high school and later softball. He was a strong supporter of Bedford and Penn State athletics. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone.
Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at the Louis Geisel Funeral Home in Bedford and on Monday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at Trinity United Church of Christ.
A funeral service will be held at the Trinity United Church of Christ at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 17, 2023 with Rev. Bill Shrout officiating, followed by interment at the Trinity United Church of Christ Cemetery, Colerain Township.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ.
