R. Dent Mortimer, 79, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6th, at UPMC Altoona, after being a patient at the Altoona VA Hospital for the past six weeks.
Dent was born on October 8, 1946, in Bedford, the son of Elson C. Mortimer and Marilyn (Gardner) Mortimer Hendon. They preceded him in death, along with his stepfather, Edwin Hendon, and his stepmother, Doris Mortimer. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Dennis and Lena Gardner, and J. Dent and Cletus Robinson.
On March 11, 1967, at the Wolfsburg United Methodist Church, he married his wife Linda (Hazelette). They celebrated 58 years together after falling in love in the 4th grade at North Elementary School in Bedford. He is survived by his two sons: J.D. Mortimer and wife Tracey (Smyers) of Bedford, and Marty Mortimer and wife Angela (Marble) of Rockford, Michigan; and four grandchildren: Kelsey and Kourtney of Bedford, and Hudson and Jackson of Rockford, Michigan.
He is also survived by his stepbrother, Paul Logue and wife Nancy of Bedford; stepsister, Connie Miller and husband Mike of Concord, SC; and Cathy Logue, wife of the late Gary Logue, also of Concord, SC.
Dent joined the United States Marine Corps on February 17, 1964. Following his tour of Vietnam and honorable discharge in 1968, he worked for his father at Mortimer Electric in Bedford. He and Linda purchased the business in 1982, until 2003 when J.D. and Tracey took over the company.
He was a member of the Bedford Methodist Church; member of the Bedford American Legion Post 113 and Bedford V.F.W. Post 7527; former president for many years of the Fort Bedford CB Club; coach of the Bedford Raiders flag football team, which included both of his sons; member of the Flickers Club; and a proud member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
If life had the ultimate checklist, he checked off every objective with a smile on his face and finished with a sense of gratitude. His greatest accomplishment was his family, and he was a wonderful storyteller, much to the delight of his brother Paul. He had a gift-a beautiful effortless ability to make us laugh even when laughter seemed far away.
