R. Romaine (Messersmith) Casteel

Ruby “Romaine” Casteel, 87, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Garvey Manor, Blair County, PA.

She was born on November 14, 1934, in Bedford, daughter of the late Michael and Mildred (Kaltenbaugh) Messersmith.

On September 5, 1953, she married Clyde Casteel in Bedford.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” Koontz, and two brothers, Blair and Dalton “D.J.” Messersmith.

She is survived by her husband Clyde of 68 of years, a daughter Cathy and husband Todd Manz of Lexington, SC; a son-in-law Brad Koontz of Bedford; two grandchildren, Eric Koontz and wife Ashley of Atlanta, GA; Amy Koontz and husband Jason Gonzales of Arlington, VA; four great grandchildren, Maggie and Bradley Koontz, and Ella and Ethan Gonzales.

Romaine graduated from Schellsburg High School in 1952. She worked for Ickes Drug Store while still in High School, then later was employed at Howard Johnson Commissary and Sears. She then enjoyed working for 27 years at The First National Bank where she retired from in 1997.

Romaine was a member of the Bedford Church of the Brethren, she also served as a deacon there. She considered the church as her second family. She loved the family vacations they took every year to Rehoboth Beach and Myrtle Beach. She enjoyed reading, playing canasta with friends, and spending as much time with her family as possible.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Friends and family will be received on Thursday, February 17, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at Louis Geisel Funeral Home in Bedford.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 11:00AM with Reverend Rebecca Zeek officiating.

Interment at Bedford County Memorial Park.
