Marcellus R. Alexander, Jr.

February 6, 1959 — April 18, 2021

Southampton Township

Marcellus R. Alexander Jr., 62, of Hewitt, passed peacefully away at home with his loved ones near on Sunday April 18,2021.

Born on February 6, 1959, in Waiblingen, Germany, Hans Peter Gilgasch was adopted by an American service couple, the late SMSgt. Marcellus Alexander Sr. and Sgt. Helen (Ault) Alexander who raised him as their only son and gave him the name Marcellus Jr. The family lived in France until they were stationed back in the United States in 1964 when Marcellus Jr. became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

On January 27, 1978, he was united in marriage to Judy K Cornell, his loving and devoted wife of over 43 years.

Along with his widow he is survived with children: Casey, married to Brett Downey of La Vale, Carey Alexander of Hewitt, and Corey Alexander of Black Valley, a grandson Hunter Downey, and the two apples of his eyes, grandaughters Kaylee and Alyssa Pittman.

Marcellus was a graduate of Everett high school class of 1977. After school he was employed by Earlston Lumber Co. and for many years worked alongside his father cutting and hauling wood for their business Alexander Pulpwood and Logs. He and his father established a strong reputation in the area as honest, hardworking men. Marcellus grew up on the family farm in Hewitt, he learned the meaning and value of hard work from an early age. He became a very strong man, a gentle giant who was extremely modest and quiet in his manner. He got his CDL and could drive and operate all types of equipment but he drove a semi-truck for over 40 years. After his father passed away he worked for Blackburn Russell, LSG Trucking, and for the past 16 years was a deeply loved and respected driver for Eby’s Sawmill and Lumber in Beans Cove. He enjoyed driving as his job and relished the quiet peace in his “office.” Having terminal wide spread cancer, he insisted on continuing to work full time until only 17 days before he passed away. Marcellus could always be relied on for any task and was never heard complaining. He was a quiet, strong, independent man, always using his hands he greatly enjoyed building things, remodeling the house, or fixing the fence to keep his favorite pet horse ”Big Moron” from escaping and following him everywhere, she was always at his side even when he was working under a car. Marcellus ”Pap” was devoted to his family and never once put himself first. His humility was an example to all and his integrity never missed a step. Everyone who knew Marcellus will greatly miss him, he was much loved and highly respected by all.
